Adventures in Farming

There is never a dull moment when you live on a farm. Currently we have 7 bovine guests here on the farm. A bottle calf, five steers, and a cow to keep the steers in line.

George here was our first arrival, about three weeks ago.

He has been pretty low maintenance (besides the twice a day bottle feedings) and has been a happy barn guest. Until tonight.

Chans and I were watching a little TV and relaxing after having supper when we hear a sort of jangling noise going on outside. My first thought was that the cats had gotten into something and was starting to get up to go look in the kitchen. Then Chans yells, "The calf is out!" We ran to the front door and we see poor George, stuck in the fence from his little paddock.

Yes, that is, in fact, an old garden gate. Apparently, he was just so hungry and desperate for his nightly milk, that he some how wiggled into the space between the bars, got stuck, and then panicked. We found gouge marks in the lawn all over the back and side yards. He's ok! He suffered a small cut on a foot and the indignity of having his picture taken while stuck in a gate.
